MUNTINLUPA, PH—The San Beda College Alabang (SBCA) School of Law proudly participated in the 2024 Conflicts of Law, held at the San Andres Sports Complex in Malate, Manila, from February 9-25, 2024.
Conflicts of Law is an annual event prepared by the Association of Law Students in the Philippines – NCR. This year’s cup signified its revival from previous postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Under the theme “Be Fierce. Be Victorious. Be Valiant,” San Beda College Alabang joined 29 other law schools from the National Capital Region (NCR) in showcasing their talents and camaraderie.
The opening festivities began with a parade of delegates, followed by an inspiring speech from ALSP-NCR Gov. Rodel Lavarias. The spirit of fair play was emphasized during the Oath of Sportsmanship led by Joanna Mahait, setting the tone for the competitive yet friendly atmosphere of the tournament.
Notably, Kathe Labayo, a former Ms. SOL of San Beda College Alabang, was hailed as the Best Muse.
From freshmen to seniors, selected law students joined in the festivities to bring home medals for the Bedan family. This comprised numerous categories in Academics, Sports, and eSports.
Venues for the events included the Polytechnic University, the San Andres Sports Complex, and some barangay courts in Manila. With the help of the SBCA School of Law Government, the athletes were provided with modes of transportation to the aforesaid locations.
Impressively, the SOL community managed to bag four awards from the event.
The list of SBCA awardees includes Eunice Joy Whigan (Chess, Champion), Angelou Sta. Juana, Luis Marco Mendoza, and Pat Richard Magcawas (Debate, 1st Runner Up), Pamela Paez, James Samuel Carreon, Patricia Jean Viloria, James Anthony Delk, Randolph James Tianco, Precious Angel Portuguez, and Jayson San Buenaventura (Mobile Legends, 1st Runner Up), John Michael Genova, Khristian Joshua Jurado, Ivan Ashley Salle, Alexei Delon Ginete, and Aidan Fajardo (Valorant, 2nd Runner Up).
The closing ceremonies, held at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, celebrated the achievements of all participants.
Winners were vested with well-deserved trophies, medals, and certificates. There was also a photo-taking session with some of the leading event organizers.
When asked about the relevance of the event, ALSP-NCR Governor Rodelle Lavarias, answered, “Law schools in the NCR see this as their rest and mode of connection with law schools to build camaraderie with others. This event allows law schools to be united once again. For our organization, we hope to have a more united law school association within the NCR.”
Furthermore, Gov. Lavarias hopes to create a more cohesive tournament for the succeeding versions of Conflicts of Law. He admitted that there was room for improvement, namely in regard to providing the best possible venues and schedules for the athletes.
To quote Gov. Lavarias, “We believe we could’ve done better. That’s why it isn’t a perfect 10. But then again, this is the first time we have returned Conflicts of Law ever since the pandemic occurred.”
However, he also clarified that the team did the best that they could for the duration of time that they were given.
