Within the four corners of the classroom and cyclical hustle, privileged-exploited studentry becomes succumbed to the standards of a culturally manufactured metric of success—merit-based grades and quantitative academic validation. It seems that our lives go on without having to bat an eye for minuscule manifestations of exploitative schemes due to the daily battles brought by the systems in place. Thus, we all brew a culture of apathy.
The juxtaposition of being privileged and exploited at the same time sends a message that the petty-bourgeoisie Bedans are certainly susceptible to forms of systematic subjugation and repression through various state and ideological apparatuses. However, on one hand, the luxuries that we enjoy often cloud the rotten realities of our time. As we sip our cold cups of Spanish lattes, backward practices that injuriously strike our democratic space down persist.
Now, in the second issue of The Red Chronicles’ 18th Volume, the student publication dares to speak when others stay silent. Amid censorship and silence, the student publication attempts to break the mold—exposing the unspoken truths, unraveling taboos, and confronting the social realities that were often swept under the rug. While we might have lamentably fallen asleep to some stinking societal ills, it is never too late to make our eyes wide open as a hawk.
