To most law students in the Philippines, the San Beda College Alabang – School of Law (SBCA-SOL) is known for its brand of being the “happiest law school.” For it to stay true to its moniker, SBCA is also run by competent administrators and staff with the aim to guide its students toward the path of excellence in legal studies and prepare them for the ever-so-challenging yet exponentially rewarding bar examinations.
Dean Ulpiano Sarmiento III
All hail the chief! Dean Ulpiano Sarmiento III, or Dean “Ulan,” is the head of the School of Law. A law professor himself, he is known for his warmth and dedication towards his students. Back when face-to-face classes were the means of attending law school, you would see him roaming around the campus and greeting both students and staff with bright smiles. Aside from being the Dean of the happiest law school, he also co-wrote the law textbook Obligations and Contracts Annotated.
Vice Dean Anna Marie B. Trinidad
Atty. Trinidad is the School of Law’s second-in-command. Her radiant and welcoming aura truly brings the “happy” in our “happiest law school.” Aside from taking part in leading the faculty, she is also a professor in Criminal Law. In addition, she also handles classes in Legal Technique and Logic. She is looked up to by her students as a practitioner who is devoted to her craft and in teaching her students.
Atty. Carlo Busmente
Being the Prefect of Student Affairs and an active professor is no easy task. Luckily, we have the “perfect prefect” for the job. Atty. Busmente is also a professor in Negotiable Instruments Law, Sales and Lease, Corporation Law, Law on Intellectual Property, and Commercial Law Review. Atty. Busmente is an experienced litigator who is also known for his brand of dedication in teaching—fair and understanding.
Atty. Roben “Atty. Jun” Cadugo
Atty. Cadugo, or more commonly known as “Atty. Jun,” is the man to go to for enrollment, enlistment, adding and/or dropping concerns, and most of your questions when it comes to being a law student. His accommodating and helpful work ethic allows students the comfort of consulting him and seeking his advice in all manner of student life. Aside from being a dedicated professor, Atty. Jun runs the day-to-day of the Dean’s Office, especially with regard to student concerns and admissions.
Being a working-student during his time in law school, Atty. Jun truly understands that, even in the happiest law school, the study of law is no easy task indeed. This is why he is always ready to aid both staff and students in the journey.
Ms. Louise Leuterio
A more recent addition to the Dean’s Office staff is Ms. Louise Leuterio. She is the responsive and active law student that assists in student affairs and enrollment concerns. You might have noticed her name on your notifications when you received your grades because Louise is also tasked to conduct the distribution of grades for the entirety of the student body. You might have also heard her voice when you called the Dean’s Office during enrollment consultations and other student matters. The transition to online classes did not prevent her from pursuing both her studies and her career in the School of Law.
Mr. Leo Acuyan
“Kuya Leo” is another efficient member of the School of Law community. His dedication to his work allows him to run the logistic aspect of the office’s day-to-day activities. He is knowledgeable in several aspects of maintaining orderliness in campus and is always there to extend a helping hand. Other than being known to assist the community with his various reliable skills, students and professors are also fond of playing basketball with him.
Ms. Sylvia Atienza
The study of law can break your heart in more ways than one. As students, sometimes all we need is a pat on the back, a cheer of “good job,” and a shoulder to cry on if emotions get too heavy. To Ms. Sylvia Atienza, the school’s guidance counselor, this is a completely normal form of hurdle in the journey to being a successful law student and to becoming a fully-fledged legal practitioner. Ms. Sylvia has seen it all, heard it all, but remains unyielding in her capacity to hear her students’ concerns and address their problems, both personal and academic.
Ms. Marilyn Yap
Don’t you just miss the atmosphere of the School of Law library? At first glance, you can already appreciate the dedication of the students as they work through their case digests or seeing them memorize their codal provisions. The campus is equipped with several facilities to cater to the needs of its law students but more importantly, it is staffed with the best personnel for the job. The study of law is not only difficult, it can also be very costly. Ms. Marilyn Yap, our librarian, can surely help you out if you consider borrowing books for your classes! She is steadfast and organized in taking care of business in the library. Just don’t ever forget to return them because if there’s anything Ms. Marilyn is best known for, it is in keeping tabs on the library’s materials and making sure they are catalogued and ready for students’ use.
Ms. Tanya Briones
A new face to the Dean’s Office staff SOL community was added this year. This is none other than Ms. Tanya Briones! To the alumni of SBCA, you may have seen her assisting you at the Registrar’s office where Ms. Tanya used to be employed as a staff assistant. Ms. Tanya finds herself thankful for the opportunity to be able to work with the School of Law, being chosen by the administrative staff as a Records Assistant beginning this semester! She will be relieving Ms. Nella who was recently promoted to the position of Alumni Moderator. In a few words with The Red Chronicles, she promised to her fellow employees and to the students that she will work hard and commit to being a good staff member of SBCA.
Every member of our School of Law faculty and staff is devoted to their work and knowledgeable when it comes to their respective expertise. From giving advice and assistance to your academic needs to providing you with support and encouragement in your daily law school life, you can count on them to give it their all! ∎
